Apple iPad-5 – iPad-mini to have Same Display Technology & Shape, Fact or Fiction

April 10, 2013

Introduction and Perspective: Rumors. What do they mean. To some, rumors are authentic wispers of truth from people that are in the know. To others rumors are complete fiction and the food for fools. And of course there is everything inbetween. For us these creations are an interesting combination of “ambitious wish lists of enthusiasts” married with “the words of amateur marketing executives,” in effort to determine the Next Iteration of an existing product, or more agressively, a New Product. With the litigiousness of our society these days, the Non Disclosure Agreements entered into by employees and engineers. In reality, “The people that know, dont talk; the people that don’t know, talk.” However, it sure in stimulating to attempt to forecast. We will pass the most interesting along for you to digest or discard. You Decide.

Apple iPad-5 – iPad-mini to have Same Display Technology and Shape, Fact or Fiction

πŸ”΄ Latest iPad 5 rumors (from China) point to Apple using the same display technology in the iPad 5 that is being used in the iPad mini. This latest information places the iPad 5 release date sometime in the third quarter of 2013, much later than the April release which we’ve heard, but not out of line with other iPad 5 rumors. DigiTimes reports that suppliers are preparing the same thin-film DITO (G/F2) touch screen technology as the iPad mini users for a major third-quarter push for the iPad 5.

πŸ”΄ The new display tech is proven with the iPad mini, allowing Apple to cut deliver an iPad that is 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter. Apple is already rumored to bring the iPad mini case design to the iPad 5, and it looks like the screen technology will come along with it to help Apple make a thinner, lighter iPad-5.

πŸ”΄ Mock-up showing difference between iPad mini 2, iPad 5 and iPad 4. via Martin Hajek. This is the second rumor to come from DigiTimes that points at an iPad 5 with this new display technology. DigiTimes reported in late January that Apple was rumored to be using the DITO (G/F2) touch screen technology to the iPad 5 with panels from LG and Sharp.

πŸ”΄ The iPad mini display tech combines with smaller bezels around the screen and software that, β€œintelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you’re intentionally interacting with it.” This feature makes using an iPad display with thinner bezels and a thinner overall size easier without accidentally triggering touch points.

πŸ”΄ The iPad mini is largely considered to be the better looking of the two iPad variants currently on the market, and with the 4th generation iPad appearing almost identical to the iPad 3 (bot marginally heavier and thicker), it is strongly suspected Apple will beautify its flagship 9.7″ Display-iPad with an anodized aluminum container. With it still unknown whether this will in fact be the case, a “leaked image” of a purported β€˜iPad 5β€² bezel seems to indicate that, at least from the front, the next iPad could borrow a few design points from its scaled-down counterpart, the very popular iPad mini.

πŸ”΄ Apple’s decision to make the bezel thinner along the two vertical axes of the iPad mini is seen as much more efficient from a design perspective, also making the new design easier for the user to hold, smaller footpting, rounded edges, and it looks much better and consistent with the iPad mini. This leak could just be another pretender trying to reignite the rumor mill, but with Apple having made no effort to alter the iPad 4β€²s design (despite having saved room through the implementation of the Lightning connector), it may be that Apple is planning to make amendments next time around, later this year.

πŸ”΄ Several iPad 5 “leaks show” alleged back plates and an iPad 5 case which is smaller than the iPad 4. The alleged back plates look just like a larger iPad mini.
