Bill Gates says “A lot of iPad users are frustrated, they can’t type, they can’t create documents, they don’t have Office. Bill’s On the Mark or Eye-Rolling Dumb. You Decide.

Want to hear one of the smartest minds in tech opening his mouth and saying something eye-rollingly dumb? Check out Bill Gates telling CNBC that the iPad is being “held back” by its lack of physical keyboard and, of course, Microsoft Office.

Explaining Microsoft’s rationale for the Microsoft Surface, a device which literally commands a 1.8% global market share, Gates told CNBC that he believed that in the future, it’s going “to be harder and harder to distinguish products” that are PCs versus tablets. The Surface, he said, was therefore the PC and the tablet of the future.

Then Gates went on to be stupid about the iPad. Saying “A lot of those users are frustrated, they can’t type, they can’t create documents, they don’t have Office there.”

This is just laughably stupid. Six months after its debut, the Microsoft Surface has 1.8% market share. Repeating this, so you didn’t think it’s a typo 1.8%. Surely, that number would be a little bit higher if “a lot of” people actually wanted what the Surface offered, which is a tablet with a physical keyboard that can run Microsoft Office.

Of course, Bill Gates is also the man who said in 2010 that the iPad would fail because it had no stylus. Who’s laughing now?

This sounds like the classic example of a very successful individual, that is surrounded by “human robots” that have convinced their Creater that every idea uttered is a good idea. Only a few in Business will tell their bosses what they need to hear, rather than what they want to hear.

♦ When one looks back to 2007 when Apple came out with their iPhone, and certainly Apple did not invent the SmartPhone, as there was a full field of smartphones to choose from before Apple jumped in, many thought why did Apple produce an iPhone. Several hundred million iPhones later, everyone knows what the iPhone represents. This year, about 5 years later, the iPhone is expected to deliver in 2013 about 160,000,000 iPhones.

A hundred million iPads later, everyone knows what the iPad represents. This year, about 3 years later, the iPad is expected to deliver in 2013 about 80,000,000 iPads.

When examining the iPhone life-cycle, with an EcoSystem (Operating System + App Store + High Quality Device + Good Product Pipe-Line) that will help assure iPhone’s longivity, is why its believed, the iPad is the next BIG Thing for Apple, just as iPhone has been over the last 5 years.
