Canon EF 100mm-400mm f4-F5.6L IS II Coming Soon โญโญโญโญ UPDATE ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ”‘

June 21, 2013

Canon EF 100mm-400mm f4-F5.6L IS II Coming Soon. This lens is my personal favorite Action-Sports Lens, as the zoom is accomplished quickly, with its “push-pull” zoom, and the focal-length range is ideal. We have learned recently that this lens may undergo a dramatic change with the internal zooming-mechanism; The change may eliminate the “push-pull” zoom method to the more traditional “twist-barrel-ring” method. If true, this would require an entirely new optical design. One of the concerns that owners had with the “push-pull” lens design, was the potential of ambient dust, lint, fibers, and moisture, that may be drawn into the Camera’s imaging-cavity, and the internal optical surfaces of the lens-groups.

โœ” Canon EF 100mm-400mm f4-F5.6L IS II. In theory, when using this “push-pull” zoom, particularly when changing the zoom from 100mm to 400mm, the lens barrel is lengthening some 9″ or more, unquestionably causing a suction, the resulting prtessure-difference is stabilized by the entrance of ambient air. If the ambient surroundings contain airborne dust, lint, fibers, humid air, moisture, particulate material may be drawn into the lens. Canon mitigates this issue by lining the internal surfaces of the lens barrel with micro-fine “felt” strips, in effort to trap dust and fibers, diring the “push-pull” procedures. Eventually, even the felt becomes worn and “clogged” with dust, dirt, including worn felt-fibers, all of which could enter the internals of the lens. Surely, Canon is re-thinking their use of this “push-pull” design.

โœ” Canon’s EF 28mm-300mm f3.5-f5.6L IS also incorporates this “push-pull” design issue. As this lens is also over-due for an update, hopefully, it too will be redesigned with a “barrel-ring” zoom mechanism.

โœ” Canon EF 100mm-400mm f4-F5.6L IS II, the maximum f-stop may likely be f4.5, this lens could be also used for Portrait Photography. Today the Pros like the 200mm sweet-spot +/- 50mm at say f2.0, assuming you have the $6000 for this Canon “L” lens. Since the subject lens is f4.5 or perhaps f4.0, it would be suitable, just make sure the image back-ground is 25feet to 30feet behind the Subject, depending on your lens-to-subject distance.

โœ” Canon EF 100mm-400mm f4-F5.6L IS II. Another Patent for this Lens. This is the third separate patent filing we have seen for the EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS over the recent 24 months.

โœ” There is a zoom-ring version that exists in the wild. We have learned that the current “push-pull” version will not be continued. We will likely see a Properly Weather-Sealed 100mm-400mm f4L Lens, with the more traditional “twist-barrel-ring” design. The resultant retail Price of this new lens may be north of US$2500. We may actually see this new puppy announced by or before the end of 2013. Also appearing in the patent filing was a 70mm-300mm "L" lens.
