AirPrint an Apple iOS Feature – Print via WiFi Connectivity – What, Where, When, Why, How of this Magical Feature – Simple & Easy (2nd Update) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🍎🍎🍎

October 31, 2013

AirPrint designed right into Apple iOS – Printer WiFi Connectivity – What, Where, When, Why, How of this Magical Feature – Simple and Easy – It is not scarey at all. If you have an Older printer, say 3 years old, it may not be WiFi capable and not AirPrint Compatible.

Hewett-Packard and Brother printers for example, issue Firmware Updates periodically which may bring the AirPrint capability to your existing WiFi Printers. If your Printer is not a WiFi enabled (or capable) printer, then AirPrint is not possible. Below is a link displaying “All or Most” AirPrint compatible printers.

In our particular situation, we had a very good 6 year old HP Color Laser Printer; however, the printer is out of toner for all 4 cartridges. And only a few thousand pages remaining on the “Toner Belt.” To buy new toner cartridge refills costs $260.

Looking at Office Depot store sales, they had a brand new Brother 3170 Color Laser for $279 on sale with 1800 page cartridges, and its WiFi and AirPrint Ready. Therefore for $19 price difference, we were ready to give the HP printer to Charity. We also have an HP inkjet which is very expensive to operate as those 3 Color C,M,Y + B&W cartridges cost about $120 to replace, every 800 pages of printing. Keep this in mind too, the cost per page for the replacement Inks. Laser Printers are less expensive to operate and the Color Laser printers these days are much more compact counter top, desk-top convenient.

With the release of iOS 4.2 in November 2010, Apple’s iOS operating system brought a number of great new features to all iOS devices, namely (A) streaming music and video throughout the house with AirPlay, (B) Find My iPhone service, and (C) iOS 4.2 brought AirPrint to all iPhones, iPads, and iPods. This article will articulate the Magical features of AirPrint.

AirPrint, What is it: AirPrint does essentially what it sounds like; it permits any iOS device, meaning, iPhones, iPads, iPad-minis, and iPad Air, to print wirelessly utilizing your WiFi network to provide the communications pathway to the Wireless WiFi Printer, assuming the Printer is an AirPrint compatible printer.

With iOS, AirPrint-enabled applications can print to an AirPrint-enabled printer. An important feature, you don’t need to install any printer-drivers or configure the printer queue. Tap print, select a AirPrint-enabled printer, and print. It’s that simple.

AirPrint Compatible Printers: Having a printer that is AirPrint enabled is necessary. Most popular printer manufacturers (Hewlett Packard, Epson, Canon, Lexmark, Brother, to name a few) have a number of printers that contain the necessary built-in firmware which enables the Printer to communicate with one’s iPad utilizing a home-based or office-based WiFi network. HP for example has over 60 AirPrint enabled printers; Canon has over 100 AirPrint Printers. Make note, having a WiFi enabled printer, or an ePrint Wireless printer is not we need to print using our iPad or iPhone.

The Printer must be AirPrint enabled. This is a Good Apple support-Link for Current AirPrint Compatible Printers: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356

AirPrint, Set-up the AirPrint printer: This is Magical. Setting up a AirPrint is almost totally automated; Lets assume you already have WiFi in your home or office; AirPrint does not require any special WiFi configuration. Lets assume you just bought a HP, Hewlett Packard AirPrint Printer, like the HP Photosmart 6515, which we have; It actually takes longer to unpack the printer and all the pieces of tape, than it takes for the install; Simply turn on the Printer; Looking at the front LCD panel, there is a Setup Network Printer menu choice to select; And select the Setup Wireless Wizard. The HP setup process is quick and easy, the user having to enter the WiFi password, assuming you have a Secure WiFi. You are done. Having been a Windows guy for decades including knowledge and trouble shooting Windows office networks, AirPrint WiFi setup is Quick, Easy, and does not require any techie training.

AirPrint Printing: This is truly Magical. For Example, if you are using your iPad and have a web-page you’d like to print… see the example screen-capture below. In Safari, at the top of the screen notice the familiar Action Box ICON with the curved-arrow pointing right… simply tap this Action Box ICON, and a panel of ICONS like MAIL, Message, Twitter, Facebook, Add to Home Screen, Print, Copy, Bookmark are displayed… Simply select PRINT… The iPad will let you know that it is "Looking for printers on the Network; In a few seconds, Voila the HP Photosmart 6510 series will appear, if you have the same pinter as we have… you will be asked for the number of copies to print, and, print which page or pages, and a choice "double-side printing" Yes or No.

AirPrint Use Notes: You may have one or more AirPrint printers on a single WiFi network (limited by your ROUTER’s Port capacity) for example, the Upstairs Bedroom Printer, the Kitchen Printer, Family Room Printer; Presently iOS6 does not provide for custome printer naming; however, if the printers are different Models, like HP Photosmart 6515, in the Kitchen, and the HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color, in your home office, you may send the print job from your iPad to the printer you select. The operating System, iOS6 and iOS7 will display a list of AirPrinters that are in the WiFi network..

AirPrint Trouble Shooting: Verify that the iOS device is running the latest version of iOS and the app you are printing from is the latest version. Verify that the AirPrint-enabled printer has the latest firmware version installed in the printer. See the printer documentation or contact the printer vendor for support.

Certain printer features or functions may not be available when using AirPrint (for example, selecting different paper trays, red-eye reduction, booklet printing, and so on). Two sided printing is generally available with AirPrinting. Please read the documentation or contact the printer vendor for details on how to connect the AirPrint-enabled printer to the network. AirPrint-enabled printers connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported. Non-licensed products claiming support for iOS printing may not be supported by Apple.

its definitely worth looking at airprint enabled printers but you can also try print n share or similar for convenient printing from idevices

    • The other methods of printing from an iPad or iPhone to a non-Airprint Printer require a Computer as an intermediary. So the Printer communicates with your Computer, and the Computer communicates with the iPad.

In our case we had a 5 year old (non Air Print HP printer) color laser printer, that was out of Toner. Buying a new Brother 3170 color laser printer on sale, was within about $25 of the cost of buying 4 new toner cartridges for the 5-year old HP printer. We gave the HP printer to a charity.
